"It's a minefield out there! Over the years, I have met countless people who claim to be 'Professional' DJ's. Having been one myself for more years than I care to remember, I can easily tell those that are true professionals, and those that have popped down to their local electrical retailer at the weekend, bought a few wizzy light effects and some cheap loudspeakers and prey on those who don't understand the difference between someone calling themselves a professional DJ and someone who actually is!
Don't get me wrong, there is most definitely a place in the market for these DJ's - local pubs, doing their mates 18th birthdays, working mens clubs and so on. Infact it is playing at those types of places that I cut my teeth. That was where I discovered a true passion for entertainment, and where I learned the importance of being at the right place at the right time, and playing the right music for different types of audience. In those days, would I dared to have called myself a professional DJ? Good heavens, no! I was 18 years old, and DJ'ing for fun whilst holding down a full time 9 to 5. But I knew my limitations, and never did I accept a booking from a client, only to decide the week before their event that something better had come along, or worse still, just not bother turning up at all".
